Asador Bastian - A Taste of Spain in Chicago

Something that I keep get asking over and over again as a Spaniard, is where to find good Spanish food in Chicago. Authentic Spanish food is still rare to find outside of Spain, but Asador Bastián is the closest you can get in Chicago.
Unlike the usual tapas-style spots that most people associate with Spanish food, Asador Bastian is a proper asador - a steakhouse typical of Northern Spain, specifically the Basque Country. The focus here is on simplicity and quality, with an emphasis on produce and ingredients that speak for themselves.
Before diving into the food I need to talk about the space. The restaurant is set inside a beautiful townhouse, which immediately gives it a sense of warmth and intimacy. The space is divided into two sections: a more casual, bar-style area on the bottom floor and the proper dining room upstairs. The aesthetic is all wood, dim lighting, and an overall understated elegance. But, my only complaint is that the tables are quite close together, and the room has a slightly awkward layout.
Now, let’s talk about the food.
Of course, the chuletón is the signature dish here, and you can’t go wrong when ordering it. But for me, the real standout is the sole. Good steak in Chicago is easier to find, but fish is another story. The sole at Asador Bastián is simply exceptional, served with a brown butter sauce and Marcona almonds, it’s rich yet delicate, proof that when simplicity is done right, it’s unbeatable.
As for starters, the Spanish omelette is quite good, and I suggest getting it topped with jamón as it adds the perfect touch of saltiness. Pair it with the pan con tomate, which they make with proper pan de cristal (very thin, crispy bread). And for sides, the bone marrow mashed potatoes is a must, super creamy and indulgent.
Asador Bastián isn’t just the best Spanish restaurants in Chicago, it’s one of the best restaurants in the city. It’s a place where every detail, from the space to the ingredients to the execution, is done with care. Whether you’re looking for a perfectly cooked steak, great seafood, or just a beautiful meal in a stunning setting, this is the spot.
